Wood Flooring

Recoating Vs. Refinishing

The life of a wood floor is much greater than it’s counterparts – tile, carpet or vinyl. A wood floor that is well taken care of can last for years to come. Refinishing and recoating your flooring as needed will ensure that your floor continues to look brand new with regard to quality and appearance.

Refinishing is a very involved process that will usually take 3-5 days to complete. The floor is sanded to bare wood, all cracks and nail holes are filled, then a series of sanding processes are done to get the wood floor as flat and smooth as possible. The hardwood floor is stained (if requested) then sealed and finally two more finish coats are applied for a total of three coats of finish. If the wood floor is not damaged too severely, a recoat may be done in lieu of a refinish.
A Recoat consists of lightly sanding the hardwood floor and applying a new coat of finish. This process will not remove stains or deep scratches, but will make a floor starting to show wear look like new. The recoat process usually will only take a portion of the day and you can typically walk on the wood floor by mid evening.
